Excerpt from Chapter One:
College life was definitely my kind of lifestyle. Everyone was so… so different!
There are very distinct groups of people: the artists, the dancers, the science majors, the culinary majors, and the sport majors, and my favorite, the theater majors. They’re just so dramatic and a lot of people wouldn’t believe them if they made a huge deal about being bitten by a “vampire.” Que the mock ghost noises!
I was standing off stage-right in the wings of the theater watching my latest snack, Joseph; recite his lines from Romeo and Juliet over, and over… and over again. Needless to say I was getting bored and so was his study partner, Julia, or whatever her name is. She wasn’t too happy I was there watching primarily because she thought that this would be her one chance to maybe get her real-life Romeo (Joseph) to fall in love with her.
'Why would he ask ‘her’ to come here? I thought this was going to be a private practice between me and him!' Juliet’s thoughts rang out as Joseph recited his lines. She peeked over his shoulder to sneak a look at me. She wasn’t expecting me to wave back with a smug smile.
Juliet could have started steaming out of her ears if she could. I laughed softly and changed my view over to Joseph’s neck. Oh… how I desperately wanted that neck, that soft skin… in my mouth.
I began to smile to myself, lightly poking the tip of one of my fangs into my tongue.
“If looks could kill…” A deeper voice quietly said off to my right side.
My insides cringed with hunger but I knew my true self wasn’t revealed enough to cause any suspicions. I turned around to take a look at my unwelcomed guest. “Whatever could you mean?” I asked sarcastically, rolling my slightly glowing eyes.
The man stepped a little closer to me, keeping his hushed tone. “That girl’s glare.” He said, tilting his head in the direction of the stage.
I widened my eyes as if I was surprised, “Wha- you mean, Julia? No….” I smiled at her and gave her a wink before looking back at the man. “We’re best friends.”
He sighed, “In that case, I could have been talking about how you were staring down my friend, Joseph.”
I smirked. “If only you knew…”
The man laughed. The sound ran chills up and down my spine.
I turned back toward him, arms crossed. He looked down into my eyes, smiling.
“Your laugh sounds like someone I used to know.” I said, keeping my voice down.
He crossed his arms too, causing his muscles to unintentionally flex. Familiarity began to tickle my senses again as the lights from the stage caught the golden stubble around his chin and his almost lethal smile. “Oh, yeah?” he asked, leaning slightly closer.
I inhaled, taking in his scent, giving myself gooseflesh. My heart pinched slightly and I exhaled quietly. “Yes. I was very close to him.” I replied.
I pulled my hair over my shoulder and lightly bit my lip; studying him. I was searching around his thoughts for a name when suddenly Joseph’s voice was ringing around the room. “Keith!” He shouted.
Keith’s eyes ripped away from mine as he turned his head toward the stage, stepping away from me in the process. My heart pinched again.
Joseph was now walking toward us with outreached arms. “Keith! You’re back in town! That’s great!” He said as he clapped Keith on the back with a quick hug. He then looked from Keith to me and smiled, “I see you’ve already met Jocelyn.”
Keith looked back at me, slowly taking me all in with an inhale. “Jocelyn…” He said before looking back at Joseph. “Yeah, I did.” He nodded. “Listen, I’ve actually got to go, I just wanted to let you know I was back in town, but I’ll see you around.” He clapped Joseph on the shoulder and looked at me. “Later, Jocelyn.” He said before walking out the back entrance.
I gave a small wave.
Joseph turned toward me, “So, I’m getting kind of bored going over my lines, how about we go down to the marina for a bit?”
I almost didn’t remember that I was hungry as the tickle of familiarity still lingered from Keith. Still in my own thoughts, Julia interjected. “Oh, sorry I’m so boring.” She joked half-heartedly and nudged Joseph’s side.
Joseph tore his gaze from me and smiled playfully at Julia, making her heart jump. “You know that’s not what I meant.” He laughed.
At the sound of her fluttering heart, my hunger picked up where it left off. I lifted an eyebrow at Julia and smiled. “No, really, Julia, I didn’t yawn once during your lines.” I gave her a light pat on the shoulder. “You’re doing really well.” I smirked.
Julia’s face was a mixture between accepting a compliment and deciphering what could have been an insult. Joseph laughed, completely oblivious. “Yeah! See, Julia?” And now I laughed.
“Come on, Joseph.” I said before slightly biting the side of my lip with a smile, “Let’s go to the marina.” I was looking right into Joseph’s eyes when he turned to look at me and he suddenly flushed with excitement that he tried to contain.
“Yeah, yeah.” He smiled and started to walk me to the exit.
Julia was still standing where we left her. “Uh, bye Joseph.”
I turned my head back toward her and gave her a toothy smile, “Bye, Julia.”
Joseph was a gentleman. He opened doors for me and even let me choose what radio station we listened to on the way over to the marina. Although, he did keep trying to put his hand higher and higher up my thigh as he drove. By the third time I nonchalantly pushed it down to my knee, I turned to look at him. “So, how long has Julia had a crush on you?” I asked jokingly.
“Julia?!” Joseph almost laughed. “Never. Why do you ask that?”
“You’re so blind.” I laughed.
“No I’m not…” He sighed with a giggle. “Besides, I’m only really interested in one girl.” He said, trying to inch his way back up my thigh again.
I forced a smile. “No… really?” Losing interest in the topic suddenly.
Really. He thought, smiling at the road ahead of him.
Another subject started scratching at my mind… “So…” I started.
“So?” Joseph asked.
I slightly narrowed my eyes. “How do you know…. Keith, is it?” I asked pretending I was just making mild conversation.
“Keith? Oh, man.” Joseph said. “We go way back. We’ve been friends since my freshman year in high school.”
“Oh, really?” I nodded. “Were you guys close in school?”
“Eh…” He wrinkled his nose. “We were both on the wrestling team, and that’s how we met. But I was more into drama while he was more of the closet-smart, jock.” Joseph laughed. “Why do you want to know?” He suddenly asked as I felt some jealousy start to slip into his mind.
Now, it was my turn to laugh, “I was just making conversation. Calm down.” I nudged his shoulder and then looked out my passenger window, wanting to be at the marina already.
Luckily, it was only a minute or two before we arrived. “I have some blankets in the trunk that we could sit on so we don’t get dirty.” Joseph said quickly while opening the trunk fast enough so I wouldn’t deny his idea.
“Sure.” I shrugged. All the more comfortable I will be while I feed off of you. I thought to myself.
He walked up next to me holding a bundle of blankets in one arm and offering me his other.
I looped my arm in his. “Aw, so sweet.” I said, but felt like it was too much sugar for my liking.
Joseph led me up a path that traveled part-way around the marina, away from the fishing dock, to a small area of sand just big enough for his blanket to fit in front of some drift wood without getting everything wet.
I smiled to myself. “You sure did find a quiet spot.” I said happily.
Joseph had quickly put the blanket down and was sitting already. Patting the spot next to him he said, “Yeah, this is my favorite place to get away from everyone.”
I sat down next to him. “Well then, I might just have to take this place from you.” I joked… sort of.
Suddenly nervous, Joseph cleared his throat. “So… how are your dance classes coming along?”
I smiled, as I listened to his heart start to race. “They’re doing just fine. I’m really happy that I started to dance again.” I said as I watched his every move.
“I’m really happy that you came to hang out with me today.” He said quickly and blushed.
“Joseph…” I said quietly, lifting my eyebrows slightly.
He was smiling to himself but was unable to look at me just yet. It was almost adorable how he was so shy right now. I mean, he was a very attractive guy. He had the smooth masculine features of a young movie star and had been hitting the gym for the past couple of months so he was starting to fill out more muscular-wise.
I slid my hands onto his cheeks, feeling the warmth of his blush and moved to sit on him. Joseph was caught off-guard and froze as I rested myself just above his knees and looked from his neck to his lips and finally to his eyes. His heart pumped quickly and his mouth hung slightly open, unsure of what to say as his hands when to my own knees and started to make their way to my hips.
“Jocelyn-” He started.
“You will not scream.” I said, interjecting myself into his mind, keeping eye contact with him. Joseph had gone completely still; hands half-way up my thighs. “You will not move a single muscle.” I added. “And you will definitely not remember this.”
Joseph nodded blankly and I smiled to myself. “Good.” I said as I ran my hand to the back of his head and tilted it to the side, exposing his neck. I leaned forward quickly and was careful to only slightly sink my fangs in and out to create a smaller puncture wound. Joseph quietly moaned but didn’t move an inch. His blood flowed very easily and had a more savory taste than I prefer. That was duly noted as I drank from him. I only drank a couple of pints before I talked myself into stopping.
I was getting really good at not making messes and found that my saliva closes wounds just as easily as my fangs had created them. Just as I got myself settled back onto the blanket and licked my fangs and teeth clean, I allowed Joseph to mentally ‘come-to’.
He blinked a few times and I mocked a yawn and stretched out on my side. “I think it’s time that you take me back to my car.” I said with a smile pretending he had just been staring off into space for the past few minutes.
Joseph’s eyes widened at the sunset in front of us. “Have I just been sitting here saying nothing?” He asked in disbelief.
“Yeah…” I sighed. “I thought you were deep in thought so I just let you go. But I kind of have to get back to my place now. So, could you please drive me back to my car?”
“I’m so sorry…” Joseph shook his head at himself. “I can’t believe I did that. Yes, of course I will drive you back to your car.”
We walked back to his car in silence as I smiled inwardly to myself. He didn’t feel much like talking anymore. His thoughts were giving off his embarrassment as he gave himself a mental kicking.
He parked a few spaces from my car and opened my door for me. “Thank you.” I smiled and walked toward my Bug. He stopped by the back of my car and lifted a nervous hand through his hair.
“Hey-uh…” He started. “I really am sorry for my spacing earlier.” He said as I opened my door and sat down into the driver’s seat.
I smiled. “Really, it’s okay.”
Joseph tried to smile, “Are you still going to come and see the show tomorrow night?”
A part of me wanted to say no and just drive away, considering how his blood type wasn’t really my cup of tea. But, being as I had a full belly and was in a much happier mood, I said, “Of course I am, Joseph.” Before closing my door and starting up my car.
He backed away, smiling, as I pulled out and drove away.
Joseph wasn’t a bad guy, so it was the least I could do to go see his show.
By the time I got back to my apartment, I was truly tired and ready for bed. A good meal always put me to sleep. It was my happy-place.
I yawned as I locked my front door behind me and stretched.
A throat cleared from across the room.
I stopped mid-stretch as my happy mood disintegrated. “What the hell are you still doing here, Adrian?” I turned around toward my couch where Adrian was sitting with his elbows on his knees and his chin resting on his hands.
“I wanted to talk about last night.” He said gruffly.
I threw my hands up at my sides, “What is there to talk about?” I asked.
“Joss, I still love you!” Adrian exclaimed with his hands shooting out in front of him.
“I know! And that’s why I didn’t want to feed off of you last night.” I raised my eyebrows at him.
Adrian’s jaw clenched. “But you still did and it’s not like you pushed my hands away from you last night either. Doesn’t that mean that you still have something for me?”
He stood up from the couch and started making his way toward me. I held my hand up at him as he tried to get closer to me. “You know that was only because you coaxed me into it, and I was obviously too busy to notice anything else happening.” I looked up into his eyes as I said it.
Adrian didn’t know what to say and stood in front of me for a couple of seconds. “I know you fed tonight.” He almost snarled, changing the subject. “I could smell it on you.”
I put my hands on my hips and raised an eyebrow. “And? What do you want me to do about it?”
Adrian’s lips tightened into a thin line as his thoughts jumbled and ran into one another. “Stop doing this.”
“I’m not doing anything different than what I’ve been doing for a little over a year.” I steeled myself, still keeping eye contact.
“That time that you spent with Emil has changed you.” Adrian muttered, causing my heart to pinch painfully.
I pointed toward the door. “Get out.” I growled through clenched teeth.
Adrian shook his head and made his way toward the front door. “I can’t believe this…” He snarled as he let himself out.
I groaned at the ceiling after the door clicked shut. There goes my happy belly-filled night… I thought to myself before flicking off the lights and readying myself for bed.
Tossing and turning in my sleep, I found myself watching Keith’s muscles and how they moved; my throat started to burn.
“You work out a lot don’t you?” I was asking as I lightly placed my hand on his chest. His responding chuckle electrified my senses.
He sighed. “I shouldn’t be doing this…” His hand hovered over my shoulder like he was going to push me away from him.
I looked up into his eyes and let my hand slide from the top of his chest to the middle of his abs. “Doing what?” I asked innocently as I heard his breath catch.
He swallowed hard but grabbed my hand and pulled it around his neck. “I feel like I’m taking advantage of you.” He said as he pushed his other arm around my waist.
I laughed lightly. “You’d have a really hard time taking advantage of me.” I said truthfully. “And, just so you know, I’m hardly the one being taken advantage of here.” 'You are.' I added with a thought.
Keith’s eyebrows rose playfully. “Oh, really?” He asked before tilting my head up toward his; his lips just mere centimeters from mine.
“Yes.” I whispered, just as he started to close the distance between us…
My alarm clock suddenly started going off, waking me up in a cold sweat. It was 7:30 a.m. already? I have ballet in an hour and I feel like I only slept for a few seconds.
I growled to myself and my throat warmed…. Thirsty…. As always.
